On 3rd July 1947 the inhabitants of Fabbriche di Careggine, a little town in the county of Lucca, left their hometown which was going to be invaded by the water of a dam. Fabbriche was a small medieval hamlet with stone houses, founded in the XIVth century by some blacksmiths from the city of Brescia. In 1947, before being abandoned, there were 146 people, 31 houses,a cemetery, a bridge and a church dating back to the XVIth century…the people had to move to the near hamlet of Vagli di Sotto and their houses ended up 96 metres deep down under the water. It was the birth of this fascinating ‘little Atlantis’ and of the Lake of Vagli! The lake was emptied in 1958, 1974 and 1983. The last time was in 1994 and most of the buildings were still standing! A million of visitors ‘invaded’ the village of Fabbriche to see one of the most mysterious places in Tuscany! Now the mayor of Vagli has announced that the lake will be emptied again during summer 2016: a good chance to visit this ghost town quietly sleeping at the bottom of the lake and to discover this region, Garfagnana, that will surprise you with its medieval hamlets, nature and tasty food!
